When it comes to drawing there aren’t many who have the technical skill like Matthew Schommer. He creates the most range of light and dark that is seamless using a graphite pencil. The iconic portraits are not randomly chosen. There is some sort of stigma attached to them. They are miss-fits, rebels, activists, those who knew the rules and chose to brake them. Music also inspires him while he works in his studio. Listening to Anita O’day to The Clash, Matthew takes his time preparing the surface of his paper with potato peels, coffee and kool-aid transforming the clean white palette to a distressed patina. Much like his heroes Matthew Schommer knows how to break the rules.
